Situated in Richmond, Tasman and just 20 minutes from Nelson, the studio is set in the grounds of Abbie’s house and is attached to her workshop. She has been lucky to have a space to create in her last few homes but this one is special. She designed it and took an active role in the build. MVZ Builders did an awesome job on this small but tricky new-build/extension. A modern space set in park-like gardens and alongside the expertly restored 1890s homestead. The main building work on the property has been completed by MVZ with landscaping and smaller build jobs completed by Abbie.

IOStudio is currently closed for visitors until mid June 2025. Abbie can be contacted via this website or DM on Instagram.

Abbie is a mixed media artist/designer/maker based in the Tasman region of NZ.  Her materials are varied, but  lately she has tended to gravitate mostly to using stained glass, copper and lead, occasionally  mixing in recycled wood or other repurposed items. Steel and aluminium are new materials that she is exploring.

Abbie has exhibited  in Houston Texas and New Zealand. She has enjoyed collaborative opportunities with inspiring artists in the US and the UK and has donated many works to charity auctions. She has made 2D and sculptural works that vary from small pieces to large installations and is proud to have works in private collections in NZ, Australia, America, France, Belgium, Holland, England and Scotland.

Largely self-taught and with a willingness to improvise while focusing on details, Abbie enjoys pushing the boundaries of her materials. Using light, refractions and shadows, Abbie’s static works move and change in the 3 dimensions. They embody both strength and fragility. All her creations are  handmade and unique.

“I have always been drawn to creating and building. I am influenced mainly by nature, architecture and my materials. I am not trying to recreate what I see in nature, but instead leverage the use of the colours, textures and translucency in my materials to create something that interacts with light to inspire and please. I believe that nature is perfection that cannot be replicated, and I embrace, therefore, imperfection and asymmetry.”
